What defines a “Competent Person” in the context of electrical safety?

In the context of electrical safety, a “Competent Person” is defined as someone who possesses the necessary skills and knowledge to identify existing and predictable hazards in the workplace. This individual is not only aware of potential dangers associated with electrical work but also knows how to implement safety measures to mitigate these risks.

Being able to recognize hazards is critical for ensuring a safe working environment, particularly in fields involving electrical systems where risks can lead to serious injuries or fatalities. The attributes of a competent person include proper training, experience, and the authority to take corrective action when hazards are identified.

In contrast, simply being authorized to operate electrical equipment does not guarantee that the individual has the competency to identify or manage hazards effectively.
